Telos Corporation CEO John B. Wood was appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe today as one of eleven citizen members who will serve on the Virginia Cyber Security Commission. The commission, which was established by an executive order signed by Gov. McAuliffe on Feb. 26, is designed “to bring public and private sector experts together to make recommendations on how to make Virginia the national leader in cybersecurity.”

Following the announcement, Mr. Wood said, “The cyber challenges facing the state and our industry are substantial, ranging from critical infrastructure protection and emergency response to education and workforce development. I am honored to serve on the governor’s commission and look forward to exchanging ideas on how to spur cyber innovation in Virginia, grow the cybersecurity sector, and protect essential cyber assets throughout the Commonwealth.”

The governor’s Feb. 26 executive order creating the commission outlined the following as goals for the panel:

• identifying high-risk cybersecurity issues facing the Commonwealth;
• providing advice and recommendations related to securing Virginia’s state networks, systems, and data;
• providing suggestions for the addition of cybersecurity to Virginia’s emergency management and disaster response capabilities;
• presenting recommendations for cutting edge science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational and training programs for all ages;
• offering strategies to advance private sector cybersecurity economic development opportunities;
• providing suggestions for coordinating the review of and assessing opportunities for cybersecurity private sector growth as it relates to military facilities and defense activities in Virginia; and
• offering suggestions for promoting awareness of cyber hygiene among Virginia’s citizens, businesses and government entities.

In 2012 Mr. Wood was named Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the national organization providing compassionate care for the families of America's fallen military heroes. He served ten years on the board of directors of Project Rebirth, a nonprofit honoring 9/11 victims and committed to building resiliency for first responders, military and veterans, and medical and mental health professionals. A portion of the organization’s documentary film, Rebirth, which chronicles the lives of five individuals coping with the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, is on permanent display at the National 9/11 Museum. 

Mr. Wood serves on the boards of Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) and Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, home of the nationally acclaimed Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts and its Early STEM Learning through the Arts program. Mr. Wood is also an active member of the business community, championing the concept of civic entrepreneurship. He is the founding chairman of the Loudoun County CEO Cabinet and served for five years as chairman of Loudoun County's Economic Development Commission. He earned a bachelor's degree in finance and computer science from Georgetown University.

Members of the commission include the secretaries of Technology, Commerce and Trade, Public Safety and Homeland Security, Education, Health and Human Resources, and Veterans and Defense Affairs, and the following citizen members: Mr. Richard A. Clarke, chairman and CEO, Good Harbor Security Risk Management; Ms. Rhonda Eldridge, director of engineering, Technica Corporation; Ms. Jennifer Bisceglie, President and CEO, Interos Solutions, Inc.; Mr. Paul Kurtz, chief strategy officer, CyberPoint; Mr. Paul Tiao, attorney and partner, Hunton and Williams, LLP; Dr. Barry Horowitz, Munster professor of systems and information engineering and chair of the Systems and Information Engineering Department, University of Virginia; Mr. Andrew H. Turner, vice president and head of global security, VISA; Mr. Jeffrey C. Dodson, global chief information security officer, BAE Systems; Ms. Jandria Alexander, principal director of the Cyber Security Subdivision in the Engineering Technology Group, Aerospace Company; and Ms. Elizabeth Hight, retired U.S. Navy rear admiral and former vice director, Defense Information Systems Agency.
